T&T fall 2-0 to Canada in final Gold Cup warm-up, Warriors on five game scoreless run

The Trinidad and Tobago Men’s National Senior Team concluded their 2019 Concacaf Gold Cup preparations yesterday evening with a 2-0 loss to Canada in a closed doors friendly in Los Angeles.

Canada captain Scott Arfield scored a goal in each half for the North American nation who are on a hot streak, albeit against Caribbean opposition, with successive wins over the US Virgin Islands, Dominica, St Kitts and Nevis, French Guiana and, now, Trinidad and Tobago.

Soca Warriors head coach Dennis Lawrence played a strong attacking quartet with Kevin Molino, Joevin Jones, Shahdon Winchester and Cordell Cato all in the starting team. Canada-born goalkeeper Greg Ranjitsingh also made his international debut as a second half substitute.

However, their failure to get on the score summary means Trinidad and Tobago have now gone five matches without a goal.

The Warriors’ last goals came on 6 September 2018 when Ataulla Guerra and Nathan Lewis scored in a 2-0 win over the United Arab Emirates in Girona. Since then Lawrence’s outfit have gone without scoring against Thailand, Iran, Wales, Japan and Canada. Four of those five matches were losses.

Trinidad and Tobago open their Gold Cup campaign against Panama on 18 June before tackling United States and Guyana on 22 and 26 June respectively.
