Joevin item gives Warriors credible win away to Guadeloupe; face Martinique on Sunday

A first half item from German-based flanker Joevin Jones gave Trinidad and Tobago a credible 1-0 win away to Guadeloupe tonight as the Soca Warriors recorded their first win since the 2018 World Cup qualifying series.

Jones, who joined German Second Division team SV Darmstadt 98 in January, scored from close quarters in the 29th minute while veteran Point Fortin Civic custodian Marvin Phillip kept a clean sheet and defender Daneil Cyrus earned praise for a battling performance at the back.

It contributed to Trinidad and Tobago’s first win in Guadeloupe on their third trip there in 52 years. The Warriors are unbeaten against the French-islanders since 1989 although their last two meetings ended in draws. Coach Dennis Lawrence will be happy that his charges went one better tonight for his first away win in 14 months as head coach.

T&T’s last men’s senior international win was at home on 10 October, 2017 when the Warriors stunned the United States 2-1 to scuttle the North American giants’ World Cup 2018 hopes. Since then, Lawrence’s charges have drawn with Grenada and Guyana at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva.

The Warriors started without an orthodox centre-forward tonight, as Netherlands-based attacker Levi Garcia played as a withdrawn striker. Garcia and Jones were among eight overseas-based players in Trinidad and Tobago’s starting team with Phillip and the W Connection duo of defenders Triston Hodge and Alvin Jones, the younger brother of Joevin, as the locally-based representatives.

Connection attacker Marcus Joseph and Defence Force flanker Reon Moore, who made his international debut tonight, were among the second-half substitutes. Guadeloupe and Trinidad and Tobago both ended with 10 players after El Salvador-based midfielder Leston Paul and Dimitri Bolivar were ejected in the 58th minute for their part in a fracas.

Trinidad and Tobago end their Caribbean tour on Sunday (25 March) when they face Martinique from 6pm.
