Women Warriors host Venezuela on 26-29 March; T&T play four internationals in six days

The Trinidad and Tobago Football Association (TTFA) will stage four international matches in just five days, as the local football body confirmed that the Women’s National Senior Team will host Venezuela in exhibition games on 26 and 29 March respectively at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva.

The two fixtures—which kick off at 4pm and 7pm respectively—mark the first outings for the Women Soca Warriors under Italian coach Caroline Morace, who took up the job in January.

It means a packed schedule for local football fans as the Men’s National Senior Team face Panama and Mexico in 2018 World Cup qualifying matches on 24 and 28 March respectively.

The men’s team, which is coached by Dennis Lawrence, will play both fixtures at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain and the results will be pivotal for Trinidad and Tobago’s chances of getting to the Russia World Cup.

But there should be plenty of excitement around the women’s team too, as they prepare for life under the highly rated Italian.

“It is good to have the opportunity to play two international games at the end of the month and it’s good for the preparation of the team,” Morace told the TTFA Media. “I have to say thank you to David John-Williams because the President has worked hard to have these two matches here.”

Morace is looking forward to the challenge although she warned fans that it is still early days in the preparation of her squad.

“It is a test for us and it will be the second time I will have the opportunity to see the players who are based in the United States,” she said. “We will not be fast because we still are in the early stage of our preparations. We have had some friendly games against the local boys and against the Under-20s and these two games will give us a good opportunity to measure where we are at this point.”

Morace suggested that she has had trouble getting the United States-based players—who are mostly university students—back to assimilate with the squad. But she expects a positive outcome in the end.

“Some of the US-based players will be coming back for the game,” said Morace. “I still have not had the chance to see some of them because they are with Colleges and even though they want to come, they are not being released to us as yet and their coaches want to determine when they are able to come.

“But unfortunately I decide when have we to start and finish the camp.”
