T&T gets revenge date with Suriname; Lawrence starts coaching era in Paramaribo

The Trinidad and Tobago National Senior Team will get an early opportunity for revenge against Suriname, after the Dutch-speaking South American nation were announced as the first opponents for the Soca Warriors under new head coach Dennis Lawrence.

The two Caribbean Football Union (CFU) representatives will meet on 10 March 2017 in a friendly international at the Andre Kamperveen Stadium in Paramaribo, Suriname.

The outing will give Lawrence an opportunity to test his local-based players before he gets his full squad together for Russia 2018 World Cup qualifiers against Panama and Mexico on 24 and 28 March respectively in Port of Spain.

The Warriors lost 2-1 to Suriname in extra time of Gold Cup Play off action on 4 January 2017 at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva.

San Juan Jabloteh winger Tyrone Charles scored a brilliant late free kick against Suriname for his first international goal. But it was not enough, as the visitors—buoyed by a masterful performance from W Connection attacker Dimitrie Apai—went on to grab an extra time winner from Invanildo Rozenblad, after Guno Kwasie had opened the scoring.

Lawrence’s predecessor, Tom Saintfiet, resigned within a week of that loss, which was coupled with defeats to Haiti and Nicaragua. However, the current coach has the security of a long-term contract as he considers his upcoming opponents.

At present, Trinidad and Tobago are ranked 86th in the world by FIFA while Suriname are 147th.

  1. Meanwhile tickets for the damn Gold Cup went on sale recently:(

  2. Not a bad place to start especially with the game staged in Suriname. Remember though, they are supposed to have only one foreign-based player and he plays in our League. I see your point though, EMP!

  3. We can’t even get a friendly with Tobago

  4. I was hoping it was Venezuela or Peru. .. even Haiti

  5. That’s not the type of opposition needed at this stage to face a very powerful Mexico side & an extremely potent Panama side. Smh…..when will we ever learn?? I guess never…
