Bass reconnects T&TEC with hattrick against Rangers

Bevon Bass grabbed the first hattrick of the season this evening as T&TEC flickered back to life with a 3-2 win over St Ann’s Rangers at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Port of Spain.

The lone striker in a 4-5-1 formation, the 24-year-old Bass gave a good all-round display with efficient hold-up play, constant movement, sensible decision-making and, above all else, ruthless finishing.

Rangers midfielder Jason Marcano struck the bar with a late free kick in the 84th minute while T&TEC goalkeeper Akini Adams was booked for time wasting as the “Electricity Boys” desperately held on for their first win this season.

The final whistle must have brought a warm feeling for 34-year-old T&TEC coach Jefferson George who only convinced the company’s management to let the team re-enter the Pro League two weeks before it kicked off.

Not surprisingly, T&TEC is still a work in progress where fitness is concerned while George has not gotten his final contingent of employees back yet. Lanky central defender and former Trinidad and Tobago international, Anthony Noriega, played his first game today while winger Sylvester Teesdale is waiting on the transfer window to swing open to rejoin his former teammates.

It is a far cry from the extravagantly assembled T&TEC outfit that finished second last year in its rookie season. But there was certainly enough to justify George’s plea for the squad to stay in the top flight.

Bass probably can’t thank him enough.

The slim, mobile frontman put T&TEC ahead after just five minutes as he collected a through ball and rounded Rangers custodian Zane Coker to score.

Rangers responded with two quick items in the 13th and 19th minutes as Jason Marcano buried a precise shot from outside the box while Devon Modeste scored with a cool penalty kick.

Ten minutes later, T&TEC was level again as Bass got on the end of a low Simeon Augustus cross and finished with a clipped effort over the onrushing Coker.

Bass saved his best for last.

With back to goal inside the Rangers penalty area, Bass let a low, left side Javed Mohammed cross run across the body and then cleverly changed direction by hooking the ball back with the inside of his right foot. He produced a finish to match too, as his left foot hammered the sphere into the roof of the net from 15 yards.

Marcano and Modeste came close to clawing Rangers back and maybe the St Ann’s team deserved a point on the overall balance of play.

But it would take a heart of stone to frown at Bass’ treble. And T&TEC, it seems, is now reconnected.
